Monologues just for kids!

Everyday life was never so nutty! Inside My First Monologue Book you'll find 100 imaginative "what if" pieces for would-be princesses, cowboys, robots, and superheroes as well as real-life issues like unfair bedtimes, making new friends, and the horrible taste of broccoli. At this stage in life there are lots of firsts, too, like going to a new school and losing your teeth, so there are plenty of topics for children to connect with. Divided into sections by theme and sprinkled with illustrations, the material in this book is easily incorporated into existing reading curriculum. Often, young children are given work written for older students that is difficult for them to understand and retain. While not dumbed-down, this material is comprehensible, relatable, and fun.

ABOUT THE SERIES

My First Acting Series introduces children, ages 5 to 9, to the basic elements of acting, directing, and producing a live theatrical performance and, in so doing, teaches kids how to think critically, solve problems, and work cooperatively with their peers.

This groundbreaking new series is for truly beginning actors, designed to incorporate theater and its benefits into children's lives at a young age by giving teachers and parents an accessible and applicable series with which to supplement their children's reading or social studies curriculum in a fun and interactive way.

Each book builds on the one before it, so skills grow as students grow. A better alternative to Reader's Theater, My First Acting Series is written by professional playwrights, and sufficiently engages children, encourages them to cooperate, and develops their creative expression.

Within this series, the Latino/English Collection is designed to support K-3 classes that include students whose first language, or language most frequently spoken at home, is Spanish. M. Ramirez has written accessible material that weaves commonly used Latino words and idioms into essentially English material. This Latino flavor breaks down language barriers and allows Latino kids to focus on the work at hand --learning to act -- while progressing in sync with schoolmates who are more comfortable with commonly available dramatic material.

SERIES BREAKDOWN
My First Acting Series contains two collections for K-3 students. The Latino/English Collection by M. Ramirez, and the Standard/English collection by Kristen Dabrowski each include three monologue books, two scene study books, a technique book and a teacher's guide. The acting technique book includes games, exercises, and acting technique lessons; the teachers guide is complete with readymade lesson plans and suggestions on how to incorporate the material into existing curriculum.

Drama & Theater

The following is a selection of plays that I have written and that have been performed on numerous occasions with different Drama Groups I have worked with throughout the years. The first nine plays - The Lion and the Mouse, The Little Red Hen, The Gingerbread Man, The Ants and the Grasshopper,The Enormous Turnip, Chicken Licken, The Hare and the Tortoise, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Ugly Duckling and The Boy Who Cried Wolf - are all based on well-known and well-loved, traditional children's stories. The play Chinese New Year is based on the legend of how each animal became associated with a Chinese year. The Lonely Dragon is based on a therapeutic story I wrote about isolation and making friends. How the Zebra got his Stripes tells the fun story of the legend of how all the different jungle animals came to look like they do today. The Selfish Giant is based on the very popular short story by Oscar Wilde; The Land of Trolls and Gargoyles is a play about a child's attachment to his parent, and No Excuse deals with the topic of bullying. Caught in the Act, At Doctor's Crowne and A Winter's Tale have fewer characters and can be used in a small drama class or with smaller groups. Finally, Anne of Green Gables is a duologue based on the very famous book Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery. In the scene, Anne accidentally gets Diana drunk and chaos ensues.

Does your class or children's group need a jump start in producing thrilling, engrossing, lively theater?

Joy, greed, love, fear, and gluttony are just a few of the elements woven into Shakespeare's plays; these timeless topics provide endless fascination for children of any age.

In Shakespeare with Children: Six Scripts for Young Players, Elizabeth Weinstein retains the beauty of Shakespeare s original language and the sheer fun of acting onstage, while substantially shortening and adapting six plays for children ages eight to thirteen.

These forty-minute scripts come with an arsenal of practical suggestions for simple productions. Teachers (and parents) will find ideas for easy back-of-the-closet costume pieces, as well as for sets, props, and music. Historical and literary background is also provided.

Weinstein has created an amazing resource for teachers who want to introduce their own students to the richness and wonder of the Bard. Her beautifully adapted texts are especially well served by the wonderfully useful suggestions for staging and music. Hurray for Shakespeare with Children! --Bruce Coville, Author of William Shakespeare's Hamlet (and other Shakespeare picture books), My Teacher Is an Alien, Song of the Wanderer, and many other books for children.

As a fifth-grade teacher, I am thrilled that I can use this wonderful resource to introduce my students to the beautiful language, marvelous characters, intriguing plots, and fascinating history in Shakespeare's plays. The adaptations in this well-chosen collection lend themselves beautifully to cross-curricular connections among social studies, reading, language arts, music, and art. It is hard to imagine a better way to hook young students on Shakespeare than by having them read and act in these delightful versions of the Bard's work. --Elizabeth Ester, North Shore Country Day School, Winnetka, Illinois

Ms. Weinstein's book is a must for every creative elementary classroom. She gives you all the tools you need to build a beautiful production of six different Shakespearean classics including comedy (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, The Tempest), tragedy (Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet), and history (King Henry IV, Part I). The book provides a detailed blueprint that includes a synopsis and ideas for music, props, backdrops, and costumes, as well as a hard-to-find pronunciation key for each character. A great gift for teachers that will benefit their students forever. --Ronald Bell, Artistic Director, Syracuse

Drama & Theater

In January of 2010, a wide-eyed English grad went from peddling software in NYC to understudying the lead role in WICKED the musical -- her first professional theater gig (ever). UNNATURALLY GREEN is the humorous account of the entire journey, from her pit-stain-filled audition to the bittersweet closing night.

Author Felicia Ricci wears her heart on her sleeve as she tackles the role of Elphaba, WICKED's green-skinned heroine. She leaps countless hurdles, both professional and personal: conquering the "Songs of Death," weathering a trans-continental "Week I Didn't Poop," enduring the artistic limbo of understudying, and -- worst of all! -- meeting the man of her dreams. And all the while learning, time and again, what it means to be "green."

Hop into the mind of an over-sharer as she discovers Broadway's Man Behind the Curtain -- and the thrill and terror of personal growth.

Recommended ages: 14 through 99.

Edwin Booth and his younger brother John Wilkes Booth were, in many ways, two of a kind. They were among America’s finest actors, having inherited their father’s commanding stage presence along with his penchant for alcohol and impulsive behavior. In other respects, the two brothers were very different. Edwin was more introspective, while John was known for his passionate intensity. They stood at opposite poles politically, as well: Edwin voted for Abraham Lincoln; John was an ardent advocate of the Confederacy.

Award-winning author James Cross Giblin draws on first-hand accounts of family members, friends, and colleagues to create vivid images of Edwin Booth and his brother John Wilkes, best known today as the man who shot Abraham Lincoln. He traces the events leading up to the assassination and describes the effects of John Wilkes’s infamous deed on himself, his family, and his country. Comprehensive and compelling, this dual portrait illuminates a dark and tragic moment in the nation’s history and explores the complex legacy of two leading menAone revered, the other abhorred.
