“Is Solitaire your real name? Did your parents really name you that?”
Follow the incredible passage of a young woman from childhood to adult hood, as she moves to the East Coast from Alabama, after her mother chooses a life of drugs and prostitution over her own daughters. Solitaire goes through a tremulous life of being raised by a single father, landing a girl in the hospital and being placed in a juvenile detention center, being kidnapped and raped, the stressful court process of putting her attackers in jail, dealing with the surprise of her father coming out of the closet about his homosexuality and falling in love with her male school teacher. Solitaire’s only escape is her passion for art and she turns it into a business by doing tattoos at the age of fourteen.
The story takes a strong and shocking turn, when Solitaire’s resentment about dealing with being raped turns violent and wicked as she attempts to have her only friend, an innocent girl get raped as well…just as it had been done to her. Solitaire watches her family crumble as she attempts to survive on her own. This is an inspiring story about dealing with the hand that’s been dealt. This is Malone’s first novel.
